I have had experience with Home Care and caregivers since my spinal cord injury in 1975 and have been using Self Managed Care since it started. Self Managed Care provides me with the opportunity to live within the community, and gives me the option to choose the care that meets my needs.
I recommend Self Managed Care for anyone who wants to provide more direction into who their caregiver is. If you find the right caregiver, they almost become a member of your family and that is one thing that you don’t get in an institutional setting.
Not only does it give you more options, but it adds to your skill set as you take on human resources and accounting roles in managing your care. You essentially become your own employer. Ultimately, instead of my caregiver situation being dictated to me, I have a lot more autonomy as to what my caregiver situation is going to look like.
